Based on the Calico Crabs, or decorator crabs, what these guys do is collect usable pieces of scrap material from battle fields or junkyards, and apply them to themselves for improvement or apply it to other unit for repair or enhance. The tiny body starts to build up bulk as the time goes on, so really old recyclers are very big.
